Canadian Mennonite University - CMU Winnipeg which proudly stands on a strong foundation of over fifty years of Mennonite higher education, is chartered by the Province of Manitoba in 1998. It has superbly combined the resources of three former colleges namely Canadian Mennonite Bible College, Concord College, and Menno Simons College. The process of creation for the first Mennonite University began in 1990s and finally got established in 1999.
Canadian Mennonite University is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and is an independent Christian University. As a member of Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the CMU offers three and four-year undergraduate and graduate degree courses, each with a Dean. All these are offered in variant fields of Music, Humanities and Sciences and Social Sciences. Outtatown, a program of cross-cultural study, service, and faith formation is also put forward by the university lately. The subject areas include a diversity of subjects starting from biology, physics, economics, English, history, geography to communications and media, peace and conflict transformation studies and music.
CMU Winnipeg holds a total enrolment of 1600 students each year. Of that total, about 500 take courses at the Shaftesbury Campus in suburban Winnipeg; between 90-100 participate in Outtatown, CMU’s adventure and discipleship program (which takes place in various locations in western Canada and in South Africa and Guatemala); and about 1,000 take one or more courses at Menno Simons College, CMU’s campus at the University of Winnipeg. The university’s infrastructure comprises of a huge 44-acre campus area that encapsulates meeting rooms, classrooms and lecture halls accommodating 12 to 175 people, a 250-seat auditorium, boardrooms, reception hall, an air-conditioned gym, one soccer field, lots of parking, laundry facilities and smoke-free environment. Also, the university provides facilities for meetings, conferences, sporting camps, family gatherings, music events and lodging.
Canadian Mennonite University - CMU Winnipeg also has a consortium of three residence buildings with dormitory and apartment style options. These buildings which are a maximum of three stories, offer accommodations that are fully furnished that is, inclusive of a stove, refrigerator, kitchen table and chairs, sofa, shelves, desks, dressers and beds. Basic amenities of today such as water, heat, electricity and internet are also included in the rental price. Complementary lounges feature cable TV, VCR and DVD player, and a pool table. The three buildings are: Poettkar Hall that has 33 rooms in the women’s wing and 24 rooms in the men’s wing along with 15 apartment units; Concord Hall has 18 single and 18 double dormitory rooms with 24 one-bedroom apartments and Katherine Friesen Apartments contains a set of 24 flats in all.
The honorable President of Canadian Mennonite University is Mr. Gerald Gerbrandt who runs this institution with the combined efforts of a group of 45 full time and part time faculty members, along with some sessional appointments. Over 85 percent of the full-time faculties hold doctoral degrees from universities across Canada and the United States. The faculty is dedicated to a dynamic teaching-learning process that is informed by their ongoing research, scholarly practice and personal commitments. The University also positions its brand by driving in professors like John Brubacher for Biology, Craig Martin for Business and Organizational Administration, Paul Doerksen for Theology and many other qualified and experienced on-campus trainers. Canadian Mennonite University is fundamentally a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges Canada (AUCC), the body that represents 94 Canadian universities.
