In 1960, the first agricultural university of India, UP Agricultural University, came into being by an Act of legislation, UP Act XI-V of 1958. The Act was later amended under UP Universities Re-enactment and Amendment Act 1972 and the University was rechristened as G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar keeping in view the contributions of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant, the then Chief Minister of UP. The University was dedicated to the Nation by the first Prime Minister of India Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on 17 November 1960.
G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar is a symbol of successful partnership between India and the United States. The establishment of this university brought about a revolution in agricultural education, research and extension. It paved the way for setting up of 31 other agricultural universities in the country.
The credit for starting the functioning of G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar without losing any time goes to the warm and resourceful personality of the first Vice-Chancellor, late Dr. Kenneth Anthony Parker Stevenson (1-12-58 to 2-1-64), who could keep people fruitfully engaged on G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar farm, the labs and the classrooms despite the lurking fear of wild animals roaming the area.

Games and sports activities are organised through 17 games & sports clubs. G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar provides sufficient games and sports material to all the hostels as well as University level teams. Sufficient number of hostel games courts and central play grounds in addition to fully fledged stadium, adequately equipped gymnasium, physical fitness centre and a swimming pool exist for athletic as well as sports and games events.

G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar Library has a highly specialized collection of 3.7 Lakh documents in the field of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences, Animal Husbandry, Home Science, Fisheries, Basic Sciences, Humanities, Technology & other allied subjects. The collection includes Books, Theses, Periodicals, Standards, Reprints, Maps, Toposheets, Globes, Microfilms, Microfiches, Records, Tapes & CD-ROMs. The collection grows at an average rate of 4000 Volumes per year.
All research in G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar is conducted on approved research projects designed to investigate specific problems under the leadership of faculty member(s) located in subject-matter departments. The research project is the basic unit used for organization, administration, budgeting, monitoring, evaluation, and processing of all research in G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar. Research projects located in different subject-matter departments, but directed to the achievement of a common goal are grouped together into a Research Programmer in which, although the individual project leaders are responsible for research in their respective projects, they jointly plan and review their entire research work in an integrated manner. This interdisciplinary team is called as Research Programmer Committee with a senior faculty member of this team acting as “Programmer Coordinator”.
G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology-Pantnagar was the first Agricultural University to establish a full-fledged Directorate of Placement and Counseling to advise and prepare the students in getting suitable jobs. On an average, 650 and 300 students take degrees in graduate and post-graduate programmers, respectively every year in 134 disciplines.
