The Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA is a premier institute devoted to research in astronomy, astrophysics and related physics. It traces its origins back to an observatory set up in 1786 at Madras which from the year 1792 began to formally function at its Nungambakkam premises as the Madras Observatory. In 1899, the observatory moved to Kodaikanal. In the year 1971, the Kodaikanal Observatory became an autonomoussociety, the Indian Institute ofAstrophysics. The headquarters were shifted to Bangalore into its present campus in Koramangala in 1975. Today, funded by the Department of Science and Technology, the Institute ranks as a premier institution devoted to research and education of astronomy and physics in the country. The main observing facilities of the Institute are located aKodaikanal, Kavalur,Gauribidanur and Hanle. The Kodaikanal Observatory has for over a century been the principal centre of activity in observational solar and atmospheric physics. The Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur has been the main optical observatory of the Institute for nighttime astronomy since the late 1960s. There are several telescopes in operation here, the foremost among these being the 2.34 metre Vainu Bappu Telescope. The Gauribidanur Radio Observatory has a decametre wave radio telescope array and a radioheliograph. The new high altitude Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle in south-eastern Ladakh has augmented the facilities for nighttime astronomy. Here, a 2 metre Himalayan Chandra Telescope has been in operation since 2001 . A seven-unit High Altitude Gamma Ray (HAGAR) telescope is fast coming up at the Hanle site.

The Bangalore campus of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA is situated in 2nd Block, Koramangala, Bangalore, at the junction of the 17th Main Road and Sarjapur Road. The Bangalore campus has an extensive library, a computer centre, physics laboratories and electronics, photonics and mechanical laboratories supporting an active instruments development programme. The Electronics Division of Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA has actively involved in the development of various Electronic Systems for use in the field telescopes. At Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Optical Fabrication dates back to the year 1964 with hand working of optical components in one of the rooms attached to the solar tower in Kodaikanal. At the initiative of Late Prof.M.K.V.Bappu, the then Director, Mr..A.P.Jayarajan set up the optical workshop. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA has mechanical engineering workshops at its headquarters in Bangalore, Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kodaikanal Observatory, Indian Astronomical Observatory and the CREST campus. These workshops have contributed to developmental and maintenance works specialized to our needs over the years significantly. These are well equipped for precision work of various kinds. Lathes which can turn upto about 500mm diameter jobs and upto about 1m length are available. In addition, precision milling machine, surface grinding machine, radial drilling machine, rolling and fabrication facility are also available. The workshops are also equipped with an appropriate inspection facility to ensure required dimensional and geometrical tolerances.

Computing at Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA is on an individual model where most users have personal computers and work in their office with a mix of Windows and Linux systems. The Computer Centre is intended for the use of visitors (mostly project students) and for servers. There is a mix of Sun machines (8 Ultra-10) and PCs (2 PIV with Windows XP). We are now in the process of replacing these with more modern hardware and will shift to a largely PC-linux based environment. High performance computing at IIA consists of an 8 node Sunfire system and membership in the Garuda National Grid Computing Initiative. A number of radiative and atomic codes are run on these systems. The internal network is run on a CAT-5e backbone with wireless throughout the campus. An external 5 Mbps connection provides 24 hour connectivity to the Internet.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA Center for Astronomical Data and Software (CADS) is a proposed one stop shop for data from various facilities of IIA and a local mirror for international data. IIA has always been a source of astronomy data, with facilities ranging from Kodaikanal solar observatory (archival data from late 19th century onwards), to more recent Vainu Bappu Observatory at (VBO), Kavalur and Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) at Hanle. Space missions like the TAUVEX and UVIT/Astrosat are under various stages of completion. Infact, CADS originated from activities related to the TAUVEX mission, where IIA scientists and engineers are working on data simulation, data pipeline, data archival and dissemination.

The library of Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA is more than two hundred years old. Since then, the library has been continuously acquiring astronomical literature in the form of books, journals and catalogues, and today it can boast of housing the largest collection in Astronomy in the country. Our library provides the Indian Institute of Astrophysics faculty, students and visiting scholars from around the globe with ready access to complete collections of print and online astronomy resources. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics-IIA offers different kinds of courses such as Doctor of Philosophy - Astrophysics, Doctor of Philosophy - Physics, Integrated Ph.D. Programme - Physics, and Integrated Master of Technology- Doctor of Philosophy (Technology) in Astronomical Instrumentation.
