University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe. At present, about 88,000 students are enrolled in 180 courses at the University of Vienna. University of Vienna is also the largest teaching and research institution in Austria with 8,900 employees, 6,700 of whom are scientists and academics.On 12 March 1365 Duke Rudolph IV (the “Founder”) founded the University of Vienna, "Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis" as it has been called by literary sources, along the lines of the Sorbonne in Paris. The members of this "universitas magistrorum et scholarium" (the fellowship of teachers and learners) were exempt from taxes and military service, they had their own dress code and jurisdiction, the latter carried out by the rector himself.


The academic institutions of the University of Vienna are spread over more than 60 locations, its centre being the historic Main building on Wiener Ringstraße. It houses the university management, library, administrative institutions, various departments and some of the deans’ offices, as well as many lecture rooms and the Audimax, the largest lecture hall of the entire university. Another important centre is the University of Vienna Campus nearby, housing most of the institutes of the cultural studies as well as the new Hörsaalzentrum (lecture rooms’ centre).Further principal university sites are the Sports Centre Auf der Schmelz, University of Vienna Centre in Althanstraße, the Juridicum (Law School) in Schottenbastei, the building in Schenkenstraße behind the Burgtheater, the Business Administration Centre in Brünner Straße, and the Campus Vienna Bio Center in Dr.-Bohr-Gasse.


University of Vienna has always been strongly orientated towards international research and teaching and therefore is continuing its efforts to maintain its relationships with other countries. It is part of the ERASMUS/SOCRATES Programme and member of several international networks such as ASEA-UNINET, the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe (UNICA), and the European University Association (EUA).University of Vienna offers the widest range of subjects in Austria: 88,000 students can choose from 179 study programmes and 10,000 lectures and seminars every academic year. Currently, this wide range of subjects is being continually adapted to the three-pillar structure of the "European Higher Education System" (Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programmes, resp. PhD programmes). These studies are supervised by 47 Study Programme Directors and their teams (Studienprogrammleitungen, SPLs).

The 15 Faculties and three Centres are dedicated to both basic and applied research.The main task and goal of this University of Vienna lies in creating and sustaining top-quality research and teaching, which are regarded as one inseparable entity ("research-guided teaching"). A strong focus on research, combining fundamental with application-oriented research, renders this University highly attractive for the sharpest minds. Research and teaching at the University of Vienna comprise a wide range of faculties: from Catholic and Protestant Theology, Law, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Historical and Cultural Studies, Philological and Cultural Studies, Philosophy and Educational Sciences, Psychology, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry to Earth Sciences, Geography, Astronomy, Life Sciences, Translation Studies, Sports Sciences, and Molecular Biology.


The Main Building on the Ringstraße is the historic centre of the University of Vienna; here we find the University management, the university library, the student admission office, the administration, some facilities run by individual institutes and faculties, the Audimax (main lecture hall), and a plethora of other lecture rooms.The Aula of the Main Building was reconstructed in 2005 to 2006 to form a light, functional entrance area that also caters for people with special needs. To the left of the Aula we find a directory of all the rectors of the University of Vienna, starting with Albertus Rigennstorff, the first rector (1365).

At the centre of the Main Building we find the Main Ceremonial Chamber (Große Festsaal), which provides a festive framework for ceremonies such as graduations. Two statues show Rudolph IV, the founder of the University of Vienna, and the Empress Maria Theresia, during whose reign a very important university reform was implemented.


Several in-house media convey a wealth of information on the activities at the University of Vienna: The Online Newspaper of the University of Vienna "dieUniversitaet.at" gives information on research, staff or events on a daily basis. The Research Newsletter, sent via e-mail once every month, informs about ground-breaking results of scientific research. The Official Gazettes are the official mouthpiece of the University of Vienna with regard to new announcements, while the "Comment" reports on new IT developments of the Vienna University Computer Center up to three times a year.


The career service of the University of Vienna, offers all students and graduates free, individual counselling in matters relating to job applications, career orientation, entry and network platforms (fairs, company presentations etc.). Registered members can put their CVs online for potential employers and view the latest job offers and work placements. The Alumni Association is the association of University of Vienna graduates that offers its members a wide range of events, advantages and networks in the fields of career and culture.


University of Vienna Computer Centre (ZID) provides more than 90,000 students and employees of the University of Vienna with EDP infrastructure and services such as e-mail, web-space, file-services, PC workplaces, WLAN and computer courses. The Helpdesk is the first point of contact in case of university-specific computer problems and inquiries about the User-IDs.The Research Service and International Relations Office provides support and advice relating to research and study abroad. The Language Centre of the University of Vienna offers students and employees a great variety of languages (currently approx. 30 languages, from Arabic and Chinese to English, Hindi, Persian and Ukrainian).


University of Vienna Sports Institute (USI) offers university members a wide range of sports. Employees of the University of Vienna can book the courses at reduced rates.The Diversity Management aims to support the visualisation, recognition, and utilisation of variety among students and employees. The Children's Office helps both students and university staff to manage their studies/jobs and parenting. Its services include, among others, individual counselling for parents, childcare, and the organisation of the Children’s University of Vienna (KinderuniWien) as well as other projects designed to bring science closer to children.


The service Occupational Health and Safety deals with any issues concerning occupational safety, including accident prevention, workplace design, occupational medical care and issues of waste management. Together with the occupational health practitioners, this department organises the annual Health Day at the University of Vienna.


University of Vienna offers its employees a wide spectrum of vocational training and continuing education options. Human Resources Development looks after the needs of all employees and supports organisational units in their processes of change with accompanying measures which include seminars and curricula, coaching, mediation, team and organisation development and demand-orientated initiatives.
