Madurai Kamaraj University is a public university located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established on February 6, 1966 as an extension center of the
University of Madras. The university consists of twenty schools comprising of seventy-five departments and is affiliated to the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university offers various undergraduate, post-graduate, professional, doctorate and diploma courses and the university also grants affiliation to the colleges and institutions under its jurisdiction. The university is spread on more than seven hundred and fifty acres of land and offers large number of facilities to the students. The university also consists of fourteen centers, more than seventy affiliated colleges and nineteen approved institutions and the university is funded by the Government of Tamil Nadu. In year 1971 the Directorate of Distance Education of the
Madurai Kamraj University was established and more than 130,000 students are enrolled in the university through affiliated colleges and institutions. The
Governor of Tamil Nadu is the chancellor of the university and the university was accorded the status of “University with potential for excellence”.
