The said airport was formerly built only for defense purpose in the year 1941 by McNamara Construction Company. Its purpose was to provide security to Newfoundland (which at that time wasn’t an
Integral part of Canada) during the World War II from the attacks of Germany. In April 1946, the Airport was opened for civilian use.
