The
Jagannath Temple is located in Gowliguda area near Banjara hills of Hyderabad City. This temple is dedicated to the
Hindu God Jagannath (which means
Lord of the Universe) and is built by the Oriya Community. The design of this temple is inspired by the original Jagannath temple in Puri, in Orissa. The temple is well known for its Rathyatra festival. (The
Festival comprises of carrying deities or idols of god from one place to another.)
The temple is built by the use of sandstone and hence the colour of the temple is red. The Shikhara or the peak top is as high as 70 feet and is the most enticing part of the temple. To build this temple, around 600 tonnes of sandstones were brought to Hyderabad from Orissa. To carve this temple around 60 stone carvers were involved. The passionate sculptures outside the temple depict the innermost feelings of a human being. There are many other God’s idols in the temple including Hanuman, Ganesh, Shiva, and Navagrahas. The main sanctorum houses the Lord Jagannath and his siblings Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra.
