The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was established in 1969 and was funded by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It was one of the world's premiere functional packet switching networks. ARPANET is the pioneer of TCP/IP, Network Control Program (NCP) and is also the progenitor Internet. ARPANET was superseded by NSFNET and was shutdown in 1990.
