Uri Avnery is the founder of the Gush Shalom (Israeli peace activism group) peace movement. He was born on 10 September 1923 in Beckum, Germany. Uri Avnery is a former Irgun and Knesset Member. He became the first Israeli to meet Yassir Arafat on 3 July 1982 during the Siege of Beirut. Uri Avnery has also served the Givati Brigade as a squad commander and the Samson's Foxes commando unit during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He has authored books viz. A Soldier’s Tale, Israel’s Vicious Circle, My Friend, the Enemy etc.
