The initiative to establish the
Bahona College – Jorhat is situated 9 kms away from the town of Jorhat in July 1966. Located in a campus of 7.9 acres in predominantly flood-affected part of Upper Assam, Bahona College provides undergraduate education in Arts and Science with the assistance received from the State Government by way of grant-in-aid.
The Peer Team visited the Bahona College – Jorhat on 10th and 11th Dec. 2003 and went through the assessment exercise as per guidelines prescribed by the NAAC. The team had extensive discussions and interaction with the Principal, faculty and members of the governing body, alumni, parents, non-teaching staff and students during the two-day visit. They toured the campus and got acquainted with the facilities provided. On the basis of the details contained in the self-study report, documents perused during the visit, interaction with various stakeholders and personal observation the Peer Team wishes to furnish the following criterion wise report.
Bahona College – Jorhat has built up a large infrastructure to support various facilities in the College. A notable feature is that most of the land and buildings have come up through donation from the residents of the Bahona area. The residents of the area are keen to donate further and supplement the existing infrastructure. Presently the campus has an area of 7.9 acres.
The sprawling Bahona College – Jorhat building houses the administrative blocks and various science and arts blocks library, canteen, auditorium, seminar hall and other facilities required for the extension activities. The construction Committee takes care of the maintenance of the infrastructure and also plans for augmenting the facilities according to the felt needs of the College. The green campus of the College stands supplementary with specially organized tree plantation and a rich collection of rare plants reflecting the rich flora of Assam.
The library of the Bahona College – Jorhat has 20,266 books of which 960 are reference books. The College also subscribes to 14 magazines and a number of local and national newspapers. Books are made available for long periods to students, who cannot afford to buy them, through a book bank facility. Annually more than one lakh of rupees is spent on strengthening the library. A computer has recently been purchased to computerize the library system to the benefit of Bahona College – Jorhat staff and students. An Advisory Committee for the library suggests measures for its effective functioning. However there is need to create more reading space and to facilitate the use of library on all the working days for more effective utilization of its resources by the students of the institution. The students may be issued a larger number of books specially, during the examination period.
whenever there is a need, doctors from the local civil dispensary, attend on students who fall ill. Bahona College – Jorhat boys' hostel constructed in the early nineties is under renovation. A girls' hostel has recently been constructed. The Peer Team noted that the available infrastructure is optimally utilized and the periodic additions to the facilities are being made subject to budgetary provisions. College offers bachelors and master courses leading to arts dtream.
