Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara owes its origin to the progressive outlook and vision of the first Vice-Chancellor of M.S. University, Smt. Hansa Mehta. Though chronologically, it was the third institution imparting professional social work education in India, it happens to be the very first to have the status of a full fledged faculty. Established on March, 15, 1950, Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara made a modest beginning as the Baroda School of Social Work (In 1951, elevated to Faculty status ) in the White Pavilion building in Sayajibaug, shortly moved to the seminar building of Baroda College and later came to occupy its present premises in 1960. The Faculty was indeed privileged to have Dr. Perin Vakharia as the Founder Dean and some faculty members of national and international repute who jointly built a strong foundation.


Mission and Vision of Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara overarching aim of the Faculty is to pursue excellence in training of social work and human resource management professionals as well as research and extension work undertaken by the faculty staff and students. At present, the Faculty is already recognized as an institution which provides technical assistance and research consultancy to various government, non-government organizations as well as industries. It will be our endeavour to maintain this reputation in future.

Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara is one of the pioneering post-graduate institutions in social work education with a Master’s degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) as its focal programme. From early seventies a Ph.D. programme in social Work was instituted. In mid-seventies an evening post-graduate Diploma in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management (I.R.P.M. ) was added. In past thirty years, the faculty has undertaken several in-service training programmes for variety of field practitioners, government employees etc. In 1999, a two years self financed degree programme in Master’s in Human Resource Management was launched. Both masters degree programmes are career oriented and within months of passing, most students are employed.


The curricula of Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara are reviewed, updated systematically by subject teacher concerned in consultation with the head of the department. The latter places the matter for discussion in Board of Studies and the Faculty Board for Social Work wherein external and internal experts finalize the changes. A maximum of eighteen months may lapse between approval of changes by the Board of Studies and their implementation. For example, this may happen if some change has been incorporated in any of the courses taught in the fourth term.

Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara has a separate building and its own on- campus library too. The library stocks a total of 12353 books on various social work, human resource management and allied subjects and subscribes for 25 journals round the year. At present only one computer is available which is mostly used for administrative work. We certainly need more computers for student training and academic use, especially since one noncredit computer applications course is on the anvil for all students .


Cafeteria facility at Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara an exclusive canteen is available in the campus offering tasty and hygienic food. In order to cater to all the students from different parts of India and aboard, South India, North Indian and Chinese dishes are offered. A modern departmental store is also functioning inside the campus for the benefit of students. Besides, a Suggestion Box is kept at a prominent place for the students to address their concern. Cafeteria of Faculty of Social Work, MS University – Vadodara is a hygienic, well-furnished and well-equipped canteen is available in the campus to provide food at nominal rates for the staff and students.
