Government Polytechnic - Mumbai was established in 1960 by Government of Maharashtra, Higher and Technical Education Department (Education and Social Welfare Department). It was established with effect from 15th June, 1960 with the intake of 60 students in Civil Engineering. In the beginning Government has authorized the Directorate of Tech. Education to appoint a necessary staff and start the 1st batch of Civil Engineering with 60 intakes in the Elphinsten Technical School building near dhobitalav, Mumbai. Now Government Polytechnic - Mumbai completes 50 years in 2009-10 has grown up to conduct 9 diploma programs with intake of 480 students and 228 faculty and staff strength.


Government Polytechnic - Mumbai has shifted to the present campus in 1985. The present campus is spread over 2.8 hectors of land and having 27,000 SQM. Built-up area. The major strength of Polytechnic lies with the developed laboratories, specially in Mechanical Engineering Dept. - CNC, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), in Instrumentation Dept. - Program Logic Laboratory, in Computer Dept. - Animation & Multimedia and Software Engineering Laboratory. Government Polytechnic - Mumbai is well developed for IT applications in academics and also initiated the activities for development comprehensive MIS for all administrative functions. The entire Polytechnic is connected with computer network with the lease line connectivity for internet applications.


The transformation of Government Polytechnic - Mumbai from a small institute with 60 intake and affiliated to State Board to the academically autonomous Polytechnic with the 480 intake having strong linkage with industry, society and developed itself as role model for others in Maharashtra State. This has not been possible without the dedicated and experienced faculty members and staff with active support of students since establishment of Government Polytechnic - Mumbai. It is my duties to offer heartily thanks to late Shri S.V. Marathe 1st Principal, and all who have contributed for the development of Polytechnic since establishment. Hope the same support from all alumni and assure best education and facilities for the new stakeholders.

Government Polytechnic - Mumbai is located at Kherwadi, A.Y.Jung Marg, Bandra, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Government Polytechnic - Mumbai provides library facility. A proud partner in the institute’s march towards its vision plays a vital role in acquisition, organization and dissemination of knowledge. It is an excellent collection of books and other materials. It is computerized all its operations using software (Slim - 21), and provide access to the collection through online (OPAC). It uses Barcode Technology for circulation of books.


In Government Polytechnic - Mumbai Gymkhana faculty is available. Various Sports / Events are organized in our polytechnic ground. In Indoor Games- Table Tennis, Chess, Carom, basketball, Badminton games are organized. In Outdoor Games - Cricket, Volleyball, Football, Kabaddi. Kho-Kho events are organized. In 2009-10 near about 400 students of Government Polytechnic - Mumbai are participate in Annual Sports / Events. Ladies sports events are organized and more than 50 girls were participated in various games. Interzonal games for ladies are organized by college of Pharmacy Karad. From our institute 15 girls were participated in various games.
