University of South Australia - Adelaide was founded in January 1991 through the amalgamation of the South Australian Institute of Technology and the Magill, Salisbury and Underdale campuses of the South Australian College of Advanced Education. Under the University’s Act, its mission was ‘to preserve, extend and disseminate knowledge through teaching, research, scholarship and consultancy, and to provide educational programs that will enhance the diverse cultural life of the wider community’.A faculty structure was adopted in 1992, and in 1993 University of South Australia - Adelaide established the Australian Technology Network (ATN) with Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Curtin University of Technology in Perth, RMIT University in Melbourne and the University of Technology, Sydney.


In 2008 University of South Australia - Adelaide reviewed its directions and through a revived Vision, Mission and Values statement established New Horizons – an outline of our aspirations, our people and our performance. From that solid foundation UniSA has developed Horizon 2020 outlining the institution's ambitions and strategic directions for the next 10 years. University of South Australia - Adelaide is the largest university in South Australia, with 36,156 students, 2396 staff, five campuses (four in Adelaide and one in Whyalla) and an annual revenue in excess of $457 million. Since 1993, the University of South Australia - Adelaide has used a framework to guide the development of teaching and learning priorities and emphases. A new framework which builds on earlier commitments but accommodates the changing context of higher education and seeks to position the University as dynamic, progressive and responsive to the range of stakeholders who have legitimate interests in higher education and its graduates, was approved by Academic Board in June 2007. The framework will shape teaching and learning planning at UniSA for 2008 and beyond.


The Learning and Teaching Unit of the University of South Australia - Adelaide provides a range of services and resources designed to help students succeed. Services include language and learning development, counselling, career services, disability and international student services. For staff, the Learning and Teaching Unit is a comprehensive resource designed to support academics in their teaching roles. The Unit's Learning Advisers won a 2002 Australian Award for University Teaching.


University of South Australia - Adelaide has a commitment to graduate qualities which reflect a world-wide movement within educational institutions such as universities. There is a deliberate focus on the development of particular student outcomes through educational programs. A number of different terms are used to refer to these outcomes including graduate qualities, graduate outcomes, graduate attributes, generic qualities and transferable or key skills.


There are two Adelaide central business district (CBD) campuses, and there are two metropolitan campuses at Mawson Lakes (formerly The Levels) and Magill. In the implementation of the University of South Australia - Adelaide's AU$100 million Blueprint 2005 project, campuses at Salisbury and Underdale were closed and the programs moved to the remaining campuses.


UniLife (a students association) is a democratic organisation run by students, which is responsive to student needs. UniLife improves the quality of student life by providing administrative support to over 100 sporting and social clubs, a diverse range of events throughout the year and free advocacy and advice services, and also produces the University of South Australia - Adelaide student magazine UniLife Magazine.


Library collections support the teaching, learning and research programs of the University of South Australia - Adelaide and are located at City East, City West, Mawson Lakes, Magill and Whyalla campuses. The strengths of each collection reflect the academic programs offered at each campus. Visitors to the Library may use most resources available in print. Access to electronic databases, full text journals and services subscribed to by the Library is restricted by licence to current staff and enrolled students of University of South Australia - Adelaide.The library is responsible for several archival collections, which contribute to a rich political, social and public health history of Australia, and in particular of South Australia. These collections focus on prominent South Australians including Bob Hawke (the first Prime Minister of Australia born in South Australia) and support areas of interest to University of South Australia - Adelaide’s students, staff, researchers and the general public.


Study rooms are provided at each campus for group work and in some cases individual use. Many rooms have computers and allow access to DVD/video players. Study rooms vary in size. Please check the details about the room before you place the booking to ensure it contains the equipment you require.A number of laptop (notebook) computers are available at each metropolitan campus Library for loan to students. Laptops must be collected from the Service Desk. Guidelines apply. They are all configured for use with theUniversity of South Australia - Adelaide Wireless Network. If you are suspended from borrowing, laptops will not be able to be issued to you.
