Established in 1982, Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun is an internationally acclaimed Institution, which offers training program, academic courses and advisory in wildlife research and management. The Institute is actively engaged in research across the breadth of the country on biodiversity related issues. Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun idyllic campus that has been carefully developed to create state of the art infrastructure encourages scholarly work.

Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun was accorded autonomy in April 1986, which furthered its pace of growth. With many countries in south and south-east Asia region regularly sending their personnel to its training programmes, WII is already considered an important regional centre for training and education in wildlife management and conservation. Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun has been designated as National GBIF Coordinating Node in India for partnering this initiative with GBIF. The project aims to build a strong support for encouraging collection of good biodiversity data for EIA, which can be shared for promoting best practices in national, trans-boundary/regional EIA and SEAs.


Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun is located in picturesque location in Dehradun, capital of the newly formed state of Uttarakhand which is about 250 kms. north east of the national capital city of New Delhi. Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun campus, though small in area, has an impressive diversity of flora and fauna. Nestled at the base of the Himalayan foothills, the campus and the surrounding landscape are characterized by a mix of habitat types which gives rise to the unique biodiversity. An auditorium within Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun campus is a state-of-the-art facility having a seating capacity of above 300. It is fully air conditioned with excellent audio and lighting system, a spacious dais with over head LCD projection system. Microphones are provided in front of each chair which facilitates interactive sessions during various events.


Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun is a residential institute and provides accommodation to students and trainees recruited under various academic programmes. There are two hostels located within the campus, with each functioning as an independent unit with respect to its internal administration. Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun hostel is administered by a Warden appointed by the Director and he/she is assisted by an Asst. Warden in all matters relating to the hostel. In total 84 single room accommodations and 40 double room accommodations are provided in the old and new hostels respectively. While the old hostel accommodates masters and research students, the new hostel provides accommodation to trainees and guests. Both the hostels run independent messes on a non-profit basis. In addition, the hostels have facilities of common television room, table tennis, carom board and lounge space. A STD/ISD services is available at the new hostel. Both hostels are equipped with wireless internet connectivity.


Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun has one guest house within the campus, situated near the Old Hostel. It has in total 10 elegantly furnished rooms, including two VIP suites. All rooms are serviced by an emergency generator set and are also provided with telephones through an EPABX system. The reception desk works on a 24 hour basis. The facility also includes a meeting hall with data ports for wireless internet connectivity. A dining room serviced by a kitchen provides homely and delicious food. Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun guest house is operated as a non-profit facility and provides accommodation to institute guests and visitors, delegates and participants attending various conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops.


To ensure overall development of every resident, Wildlife Institute of India – WII Dehradun provides all the required facilities for sports and recreation. There is a large playground and floodlit tennis, badminton and basketball courts. A long nature trail around the artificial lake within the campus is used extensively for both jogging and walking by the students and faculty alike. Each year students and staff participate in the Annual All India Forest Sports meet.
