James River Park. It was originally a
Broad rock Island and was explored by Capt.
John Smith in year 1607.During the period of American Civil war many Union soldiers were imprisoned there. It was a site of nail manufacturing plant, hydro electric plant and was also used as a fishery. The first owner of the Island was
William Byrd and his family and they held it for more than hundred years.
The Pedestrians and bicycle riders can reach the Island through Suspension Bridge that starts under
Lee Bridge on Tredegar Street. The Island can also reached by foot through Southern Shore if the water level of James is low. The Hollywood Cemetery and

Between 1904 and 1967 Hydro electric power plant was built and operated by
Virginia Electric Power Company on this Island and it was formally converted into park in year 1973.Belle Isle is a great place for outing and offers many opportunities to view and enjoy like Walking, Canoeing, Swimming, Biking, Wading, Kayaking, Rock climbing, Nature study,
