Thiagarajar College – Madurai was founded on the 7th July 1949. It was formally opened on 12th October 1949 by His Excellency, the King of Bhavanagar, the then Governor of the Madras State. In the inaugural function, the Founder described the college as a “small and humble endeavor in education”. There is a popular saying in the college about the opening date, “The College will remain an immortal one as it was opened on 7th July 1949. Since then, the college has become a vibrant place and one of the premier institutions in Madurai. The college was opened with only three undergraduate courses but now boasts of eleven core branches and other related subjects. It offers different kind of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, M Phil and PhD courses.


With 62 years of history behind it, Thiagarajar College – Madurai is a private and aided institution is managed by Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar Memorial Trust. The college covers a total area of 13 acres with a sprawling coverage of rare trees. It is situated on #139-140, Kamarajar Salai, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The mission of Thiagarajar College – Madurai is to render dedicated and yeoman service for the cause of higher education, especially for the weaker sections of the society. Its learner-centric syllabi and innovative curriculum give students opportunities to meet the challenges of the contemporary corporate and academic world. The faculty contributes to the overall improvement of the college in the fields of infrastructure, information and computer technology aids, extension activities and welfare programmes.


Employability, along with academic excellence, is the focal point of Thiagarajar College – Madurai . It aims to spread quality education, fostering excellence in research and promoting academic inquiry. It has been recognised as a Research Centre of Excellence since 1978 and was upgraded as an autonomous institution in 1987. It was first accredited with Five Stars by National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2001 and was re-accredited with ‘A’ Grade in 2007.


Thiagarajar College – Madurai Library is one of the oldest libraries in Madurai and houses a rare and valuable collection of books. The general library and department libraries have a total of 89,190 books on various subjects. The library has a rare collection of ancient books both in Tamil and English languages. The periodical section has back-volumes of Journals in all disciplines. The library has bought 76 Journals. In addition to Hostel for Men (Valluvar Illam), Women's Hostel was started in - to provide a safe and protected place of residence for girl students who come from far off places. With all its available facilities, the hostel functions both as a place of rest and a springboard for further academic activities.


Thiagarajar College – Madurai has the bank facility in the campus. The bank provides 10 to 4 service to the staff and students within their reach. It makes the process of paying fees an easy one. The canteen provides the staff and the students a means for quenching their thirst and feeding their hungry stomachs in the midst of their busy academic schedule. It remains a much-sought place and always reminds one of the couplet in the Thirukkural, “One will be provided with food for stomach, when there is no food for ear”.


Thiagarajar College – Madurai Career Guidance Cell was started in 2003. The cell prepares the students for campus interviews and job placement and train the students for competitive and civil service exams. It arranges training programme on soft skill development and provide career counseling. The cell organises workshops and seminars on personality development, Interpersonal relationship, communication skills and presentation skills to enable all round development of individuals. It provides information on professional development courses, higher studies available in India and Abroad. The cell also conducts training programmes on behavioral skills and stress management ultimately helping the students to discover their strengths, sharpening their interests and planning their future.
