Safari Park well known as "The
African Adventure” with all the "Big Five” presence was the highlight of famous family attraction park located in
St. Leonards Hills in the
Town of Windsor, Berkshire, London. Billy Smart’s
Circus family bought the St. Leonard’s estate in the year 1969.The park’s main attraction was drive through the
Animal enclosures and have a close look on animals like Alligators, Beers, Buffalos, Chimpanzees, Deers, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Lions, Rhinoceros, Tigers; the Dolphinarium complex; spacious and cosy walk –in aviaries with birds featuring Cranes, Ducks, Eagles, Emus, Ostriches, Parrots, Pelicans and the list go on.
The ownership of the park changed several times and they have incorporated park with many circus and non-circus animals too. The park became a popular drive- through zoo. Themes International bought and renovated the park and introduced many an African theme park rides , theme eateries and games and changed the complete outlook of the park.
Seaworld was the one of the
Windsor Safari Park’s key attraction. It was the house for dolphins, killer whales, penguins and sea lions. There were
Daily acrobatic shows by the in house members. Kids really enjoyed the acrobatic shows performed by
Dolphins and penguins. The Park had an excellent
Dolphin Research Project with an objective to raise funds for the research on sonar
Communication and behaviour.
Themes International went to receivership by January 1992 and was forced to shut
Down soon as they have incurred major financial loss in the beginning of 1990s due to British recession. The park was purchased by the
Lego group with an intention to have theme park like the one they had in Billund, Denmark.
Legoland Windsor was opened in a
Grand style in the year 1996.
Windsor Safari Park was closed on 25 October,1992. More than 640 animal inmates were rehomed and special advisory board was set up to overlook the process of pacing the animals.The dolphins were moved to Dolfinarium Harderwijk, Netherlands. The Hill train of Legoland Windsor, formerly known as funicular railway, the only left alone from the Windsor Safari Park days.
