Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario; The Michigan
Central Railway Tunnel (1910) built across the river Detroit are the frontrunners. The Detroit – Windsor tunnel is jointly owned by city councils of Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan and is maintained by the Detroit – Windsor Tunnel Company, LLC.
The tunnel has a total length of 1570metres (5150ft) and width of 6.7metres(22ft).The Parsons, Klapp, Brinckerhoff and
Douglas were the firms were involved in building a tunnel across the Detroit river.
Burnside A was the executive engineer. The engineer of design was Soren Anton Thoresen and the most highlighted ventilation was designed by Ole Singstad. Around $ 25 Million was spent to finish the construction work.
The tunnel section have 3 major levels. The lower level brings the fresh air under pressure takes to the
Mid level with a force where the traffic lanes are located. Finally, the vehicle emissions are expelled through ducts situated at the far end of the tunnel.
The tunnel has a capacity of 2000 vehicles per hour . Nearly 30000 vehicles pass on a
Daily basis and approximately, 10 million vehicles per year make use of the tunnel. To pass the tunnel vehicles need to pay a nominal toll of around USD 4.50/CAD 4.50 for autos entering into US and USD 4.75/CAD 4.75 for autos travelling into Canada.
