Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagar is a prominent woman Post Graduate College of the region situated very close to the Indo-Pak border. Inspired by the teaching of the great socio-religious reformer, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, particularly his emphasis on women education, the college was established in the year 1965 with only 46 students and today the students strength has now crossed 1500. However, a substantial part of its revenue comes from other sources, mainly self financing programmes. The college has patronage and guidance of 105 years old Swami Sarvanand Ji who also happens to be Chairman of the managing body of the College. The College secured recognition under section 2(f) and 12B of the UGC Act in 1979.
The Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagar applied for accreditation to the NAAC and accordingly submitted its self-study report in Feburary, 2004. The NAAC appointed the following Peer Team to visit the College for assessment. The aims and objectives of the College is to provide quality education to female students particularly from rural areas, in order to enable them to face the challenges of modern times. The syllabus for various programmes offered by the College is prescribed and modified from time to time by the University. Several senior teachers of this College have been members of Board of Studies of the University and made their contribution in updating of the syllabi. The College has a wide range of teaching programmes.
The Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagaris located in a constrained area of 5 acres which is almost fully occupied by the academic blocks and Hostel. The College has recently acquired a plot of land nearly which is being used for Games and Sports. It has adequate infrastructure to support the network of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Besides 26 lectures halls, 15 laboratories, there are music room, seminar hall, and an auditorium. The College has playgrounds, hostel and bus facilities. To keep pace with the academic growth the infrastructural facilities in terms of finances, are met with the assistance from UGC, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth Affairs, ICSSR, and through their own resources, such as fees from self financed courses, exhibitions, craft meals and donations from public personnel’s. NSS and NCC do voluntary work for Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagar maintenance. Different committees are framed under the supervision of the Principal to play relevant role in administration and general up keeping of the institute. Beautification and gardening is supervised by the teachers of the botany department.
There is a central computer centre, which is accessed by students and teachers even during the holidays. Besides, the administrative office and library have computers. The College has internet facility too. The College library has about 22,000 books and subscribes to 32 journals and periodicals. The purchases for last two years included about 1800 books, 32 periodicals and 9 newspapers. The library remains open for 7 hrs. Six days a week. It has reprographic, computer and audio-visual facilities. There is a small book bank section. The library is under the process of computerization. The UGC sanctioned in 2003 a spoken Sanskrit centre which has done good work in training practically all the students of the college in spoken Sanskrit.
The Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagar has a Hostel accommodating 87 students and 8 teachers. The Hostel has necessary facilities for living and recreation. The college has recently received a grant from UGC of Rs. 25 lacs for the extension of girls Hostel. The work will be undertaken soon. The College has fully fledged Physical Education Department in which two qualified teachers and 4 to 6 coaches are invited to provide training to young sports persons in various games. Besides the traditional games, the college provides facilities for fencing, archery, and pistol shooting.
The Shanti Devi Arya Mahila College – Dinanagar have effective mechanism for maintenance and optimal use of infrastructure. The College has basic facilities for health care that includes a small dispensary for first aid. There is adequate equipments for most of the games. There is a good gymnasium hall with latest equipment for workouts. Selected sports women attend the camps organized by G.N.D. University in different tours. The College gives a number of incentives to good sports women. College offers different kind of courses leading to different streams.
