Chellammal Womens College – Chennai started functioning since then, approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Chellammal Womens College – Chennai plays a significant role among the various educational institutions of Pachaiyappa’s Trust in imparting education to the women students of the economically and socially backward sections of the society. The college is named after the philanthropist Mylai Chellammal, wife of Thiru. Vadamalai Gramani who donated her land to Pachaiyappa’s Trust for the cause of women.
Chellammal Womens College – Chennai is situated at 112, Anna Salai, Guindy, Chennai. As the Trust Board members felt the necessity to establish a Women’s College, the poor students hostel became the building for Chellammal Womens College – Chennai. The foundation stone was laid by the then Education Minister of the State Thiru. Navalar Nedunchezian on 22nd July 1971 on 12 acres of land. At first affiliation was granted to Pre-University classes. In 1972 affiliation was granted to Degree Courses.
The undergraduate course in Tamil Literature was the first degree course to be started. Later, the degree course in Economics was introduced. Subsequently in the year 1976 the Degree courses in English Literature and Zoology were started. When Pre university course were attached with schools in 1979, Trust Members with great effort introduced Chemistry course in the undergraduate level and started a Post Graduate Course in Tamil. In 1982 the degree course in Commerce was introduced. M.Phil course in Tamil Literature was started in the year 1999 to promote Research work.
Chellammal Womens College – Chennai Library is a treasure house of knowledge. The book section includes reference books, books by Indian and foreign authors, encyclopaedias and books in career guidance. Several international journals are made available to the students. Comfortable seating and a calm atmosphere render the library a pleasant place to browse through anything ranging from the day's newspaper to the latest best seller. The library is computerized and is open to the students from 9 AM to 5 PM on all working days. One of the services provided by the Department of Computer Science, the browsing centre provides the staff and students access to internet on working days from 10 am to 5 pm.
Chellammal Womens College – Chennai physical education department is led by our director Mrs.M.Rajakumari. M.Sc, M.PEd, Mphil. We have enough grounds and potential for developing various types of play courts with the Day and evening college strength of nearly 2000 students, sincere efforts are taken to develop and harness the athletic and sportive Talents of all our students. Under the semester system 2 credits are awarded to each student with a compulsory games attendance. Students are involved constructively in various sports and games. There are around 14 teams for different games and sports they are: Cricket, Hockey, Basketball, Handball, Volleyball, BallBadminton, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Football, Chess, Tabletennis, Swimming, Tennis, Badminton.
