Ponda Education Societys College of Arts and Science – PES College of Arts and Science Ponda was established in 1986, and has been affiliated to Goa University ever since. The University Grants Commission (UGC) recognitions under 2(f )and under 12 B was granted in 1998. The main goals and intentions was to provide facilities for higher education to the rural areas where students otherwise have had to travel a minimum of 20 km to the nearest college in Margoa. This college being located in the heart of the rural area of Goa in a Campus of 8.75 acres brought the possibility of the students from rural areas to be exposed to the higher education. Most of the students in this college come from within the radius of about 12 k.m. in the East (Borim, Shiroda) to 35 k.m. in the South East (Sanguem) to 20 k.m. in the West (Ribander ) and 35 k.m. in the North East(Sancordem). The college is situated in the Bandiwadi Panchayat.
It is evident after examining and discussing with the faculty, staff and students that Ponda Education Societys College of Arts and Science – PES College of Arts and Science Ponda has identified their goals and mission to continue as an education institution for rural reconstruction. Right from the beginning the college and its management refrained from being totally financially supported either by industrialist or missionaries or the Government. They also took the first step of ensuring a stable financial viability and establishing a strong Science faculty. This was achieved by getting into a closer relationship with the existing social environment and by meeting the Parents or Guardians of every student at the time of admission. The College has an enviable record of admitting almost every Ponda Education Societys College of Arts and Science – PES College of Arts and Science Ponda student who applies for admission and Principal also taking the responsibility of ensuring that those students who have financial difficulties are helped through various means first to get admitted and second to continue their studies.
The Ponda Education Societys College of Arts and Science – PES College of Arts and Science Ponda strength today stands at 544 with 54 males students in B.A. as against 208 girls and 190 male students in B.Sc. as against 163 females. Therefore roughly 67% are females. Similarly, out of teaching faculty members of 51, there are 27 females and 24 male faculty members. There are 16 temporary faculty members amongst the 51. Thirteen faculty members have Ph.D., while six have M.Phil. d egrees. In the Ponda Education Societys College of Arts and Science – PES College of Arts and Science Ponda , There are 39 non-teaching staff, 3 faculty members are P.G. recognized teachers from Goa University. There are 9 departments in the faculty of Arts comprising of English, Marathi, Konkani, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Economics, and Hindi. There are 6 departments in the faculty of Sciences comprising of Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Physics, Mathematics and Microbiology. Out of the 15 departments 9 departments have female Head of Department.
