Dav College, Jalandhar was founded in 1918 by Principal Pt. Mehr Chand, Mahatma Hans Raj, Pt. Lakhpat Rai and Lala Radha Ram in the sacred memory of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati. DAV College Jalandhar has completed 83 years of dedicated service to the nation. It stands at the apex by the virtue of its being the largest Arts, Science and Commerce College in this part of the country. Dav College, with the distinction of being the first college in the country to get four-star rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2001, has a sustained record of excellence in academics. The list of alumni makes the college proud. The Nobel laureate Dr Hargobind Khurana, renowned ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, noted Bollywood singer Sukhwinder, famous Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai, Ms M.C. Borwankar and Dr. K.K. Talwar, Director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, were students of DAV College, Jalandhar. The field of sports has also been dominated by the students of this college, which produced as many as 17 Olympians and 20 international players in hockey alone.
Dav College library, built in the memory of Lala Lajpat Rai, the lion of Punjab, has claimed to have shaped the carriers of thousands of young men and women. It came into existence in 1918 and was housed in the College Hall. Earlier the purchase of books and journals was seldom and the visits of library users were still rare. However, under the able stewardship of Pt. Mehar Chand, the dedicated founder Principal, the Library progressed and prospered more than any other college library could do in undivided Punjab. Pt. Mehar Chand raised funds and managed donations for good books to build up a rich and marvelous collection of books. In the year 1928, Principal Mehar Chand got constructed a new building for library which became the envy of many educational institutions. The building provided enough of space for book - stacks and reading seats and was placed under charge of Pt. Lahori Ram as Librarian who served this department upto 1964, when Lala Suraj Bhan , an eminent educationalist, joined as Principal of this premier Institution. He took sound steps to accelerate the progress of the library.
DAV College, Jalandhar has been holding the centre stage of the Indian Sports for the last six decades. The distinctions won by our sportsmen are not limited to University level alone but they have also put the stamp of excellence on the sports history of the country and even the world. Eight of our sportsmen have won the prestigious Arjuna Awards. The college has produced as many as 17 Olympians and more then 100 Players who have represented India in the International arena of sports.
DAV College on its campus has three canteens: - For Girls, For Boys, and For Teachers. These are daily inspected by the College Resident Medical Officer for the maintenance of proper cleanliness and hygienic conditions. The rates are fixed by the college authorities. Students are advised to visit the college canteen for refreshment. Purchases from the shops outside the campus should be avoided.
DAV College has its own Health Centre and the resident medical officer is available to the students. Students are advised to call at the college clinic whenever indisposed. It is better to seek the medical aid as soon as the need arises, then to allow the disease to become complicated.
DAV College has two hostels for boys: Mehar Chand Hostel and Lakhpat Rai Hostel, which provide accommodation to nearly 900 students in 480 rooms. There is a Third Hostel exclusively for girl scholars with a capacity of as many as 350 residents.
